Crew came out to fix a leak in propane pipe in house. We pointed out where it was behind drywall, so it was extremely easy to find the leak. They were told we couldn't afford an enormous bill and to let us know if it would be large, and they agreed they'd come out and quote. Their "quote" was saying they charged $90 per hour for labor. While in itself, $90 is acceptable per hour, for a job that would take around 2 hours at most.
They located the leak with relative ease and spent the first hour figuring out how they would tackle the fix. They said they had to get a part since they didn't have it, which also was fine. They returned and spent another hour fixing the pipe, and got our gas fireplace lit which was great, at this point we had them in the house for 2 hours and was expecting to pay that in labor + part cost, which was completely agreeable.
When they handed my wife the bill for $385, she was stunned. We were charged for the time the crew wasn't even at the house, and an additional diagnostic fee on top of the first hour. Essentially charging us double time for the first hour, another hour labor for time they weren't working on our pipe, and a final hour of labor, plus the $35 for the part.
On top of it all, our fireplace worked for less than 24 hours after everything was "fixed" and we now have to hire another contractor to come fix whatever the problem is now. While I understand they may not have caused or checked everything out that would lead to the inoperability of the fireplace, I can't help but feel deceived with "we charge $90 per hour" turned into what I mentioned above. I wish we had went with a different company. An expected $220~ turned into almost double without any warning.
